OHIO UNIVERSITY ENSEMBLES
THE OHIO UNIVERSITY MARCHING 110
|
|
The Ohio University Marching 110 directed by Dr. Richard Suk consists of about 240 members and marches with a unique and exciting high-step style. The Marching 110 is known for its popular music selections and exciting half-time show that ends with a dance break. I had the honor of serving as a Music Section Leader where I led clarinet sectionals. This organization required a large time commitment and utilizing time management was very important. The Marching 110 has performed at many NFL games including the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and the Cincinnati Bengals. This organization also opened a lot of opportunities for other travel including trips to the Bands of America Championships in Indianapolis and even a European trip to Rome, Italy and Dublin, Ireland. The Marching 110 even went viral on Youtube, with hits "Party Rock Anthem", "Gangnam Style", and "What Does the Fox Say", all of which I was involved in. I had the opportunity of serving as a Music Section leader for the Clarinet section for two years. This positions included leading the Clarinet section in music sectionals, organizing events, and being a general leader for the band.
OHIO UNIVERSITY VARSITY BAND
The Ohio University Varsity Band is a smaller group composed of members of the Marching 110 and directed by Dr. Richard Suk and Mr. Josh Boyer. This group plays at all of the home men and women basketball games. By attending games or other volunteer events, members earn "points" that eventually determine who will be selected to travel to the championship games, and if the team does well, even the NCAA tournament. This elite group that is selected only consists of 30-32 members. In 2012 and 2013, I was one of 2 clarinets selected to go to tournament. In 2012, the Ohio men's basketball team went all the way to the Sweet Sixteen, which means we traveled to Cleveland, Nashville, and even St. Louis.

It is made of mostly graduate students and advanced undergraduate students. This group performs anywhere from 3-5 concerts during a semester, usually in conjunction with the Symphonic Band. The Wind Symphony is also known to collaborate with the choral, orchestral, and even jazz ensembles for special concerts throughout the year. In the past, the Wind Symphony has professionally recorded and debuted new pieces of music. The Wind Symphony has also performed at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference in Columbus, OH. I had the privilege of being a part of this ensemble for two years.

UNDER THE ELMS SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
"Under the Elms" is a summer community band found in Athens, Ohio. The band is directed by Dr. Andrew Trachsel and it consists of community members, school of music faculty, and music majors. This band performs five concerts each summer, with one night of rehearsal in preparation for each. The size of the ensemble varies from each week, but usually contains around 80-100 musicians. This summer band is highly respected in Athens, with a large attendance at each concert. In the summer of 2015, I was selected to be a summer coordinator for this ensemble. My duties included set-up and tear down for each rehearsal and performance and copying the music and assembling all of the folders for each concert, as well as playing clarinet for each performance. I also had the opportunity to rehearse and conduct two pieces with this ensemble, "John Williams In Concert" arranged by Paul Lavender and "In Heaven's Air" by Samuel Hazo.
